An AU nuzgul: What would have happened if Pippin had not dropped that pebble down the well in Moria? Would Gandalf still have fallen with the balrog from Khazad-dum? If not, how would that have affected later events.
Would some of the Fellowship have gone to Mordor, and what impact would this have had on the war in Gondor and Rohan? Would Isengard have fallen, and if not, how would that have changed things?
If Gandalf did not return as Gandalf the White but instead stayed Gandalf the Grey, what would have changed?
Any other number of variations are possible. I'm sure someone wants to tackle this AU nuzgul.
