Dram of Evil/Seed of Goodness
Challenge Details
A heroic character should have flaws, lest they be Mar(t)y S(t)ues. However, our instinct is to write those flaws forgiveably--these are our heroes, after all. By contrast, villains we tend to write mundanely, i.e., as understandable to us, when perhaps that is a bit too easy and makes them less villainous.
In light of this, your challenge is to do either (or both) of the following:
1) Pick your personal favorite hero--write a story that centers on a really existing mundane flaw (jealousy, quick-tempered, arrogance, etc.) and doesn't excuse it even though there would be a resolution and even explanation of said flaw.
2) Pick your personal favorite villain--write a story that centers on a really existing *good* trait (aesthetic sensibility, love for a wife or husband/pet/child, loyalty, etc.) without at the same time making him or her any less the villain of fantastic proportions that s/he is in terms of his/her other actions and mindset.
You have one year to write this fic, beginning 3/15/03. You DO NOT have to write both of the above; one will suffice.

Three Ainur tell a story to three silent listeners, who just happen to be Nienna, Gandalf and Frodo (who thinks it is nightmares). Finally edited into comprehensible format.

- Minds work in a marvellous way that we do something thinking that it is for one reason, when really in our hearts we know it is for another, though we use our mind’s thought to justify our actions.
