New Member Challenge
Challenge Details
Revision!: please read definition of "new member" below to see if you qualify. This is a challenge for any member who has been a member for fewer than four months or who, at the time of reading this, has written three (3) or fewer Tolkien fanfics. Choose one of the following--there are three choices from "The Hobbit," three from "Lord of the Rings," and three from "The Silmarillion."
The Hobbit
1. Thranduil's interview with his butler (Galion, see Resources: character bios) and the "turnkey" captain of guard who fell asleep on the job.
2. The unsung messenger: from its own perspective, write the tale of the flight of the thrush to deliver Bilbo's message to Bard. (Inside Information, Fire and Water)
3. Pick any surviving member of Thorin's company. Write the story of waiting on word of Thorin's death, ending when Bilbo comes out of the tent and the news is announced.
LOTR
4. Boromir walks into Rivendell and encounters his first elf.
5. Pippin, Sam, and Bill exploring the dell while Strider, Frodo and Merry are climbing Weathertop. (A Knife in the Dark, FotR)
6. Write the reaction of any individual other than Frodo or Sam to Bilbo's recitation of "Eärendil was a mariner." Can involve other characters, discussion of the poem, but should be a vignette. (Many Meetings, FotR)
Silmarillion
7. Gil-galad and Elendil meet at Amon Sûl to march out to Mordor. What would they talk about?
8. Any Elf of the Silmarillion meets an Ent for the first time.
9. Events in Middle-earth from the perspective of any being in Valinor.
