Change One Thing, See What Happens

Lie Down in the Darkness, Rise up from the Ash

49. Notes

Chapter notes from last three chapters:

From: The Fires of Orodruin:

The Great Music is over all, but not all is sung or seen. Beyond the eyes even of the soul it sings on, and shifts as voices rise and fall silent.:

"And some have said that the vision ceased ere the fulfillment of the Dominion of Men and the fading of the Firstborn; wherefore, though the Music is over all, the Valar have not seen as with sight the Later Ages or the ending of the World" - "Ainulindalë," The Silmarillion, 9.

From Discant:

Or can it measure what even the Wise cannot foresee?: "If he regains it, your valour is vain, and his victory will be swift and complete: so complete that none can foresee the end of it while the world lasts." - Gandalf, "The Last Debate," RoTK. However: "Who of all the wise could have foreseen it? Or if they are Wise, why should they expect to know it, until the hour has struck?" - Elrond, "The Council of Elrond," FoTR.

Cîr! Cîr uin annûn! – I think this is correct. If it is, Ardalambion and the compiler of the Parviphith are to be credited. If not, feel free to correct me so I can change it.

"Discant": "countermelody either composed or improvised above a familiar melody" (

From Oilima Markirya:

The title itself is from Tolkien's original title for the poem, which means "The Last Ark." See here: Markirya.

The Namarië song is in "Farewell to Lórien" in FOTR.

To everyone who stuck with this story from August, 2001, when the first chapter of Lie Down in the Darkness, Rise Up from the Ash was posted, to today – thank you! I hope you enjoyed the story and that the ending feels worth the wait, though I have my fears on that count. I am sorry for the long intervals in between updates, and particularly for the last two years, when I could not seem to move Frodo across Mordor. His head-space and mine just didn't want to cooperate with each other for the longest time.

To everyone who beta-read various chapters of this, or e-mailed to note that I'd missed a word, dropped a clause, or made some other error, or who helped me with Sindarin or Anglo-Saxon grammar – thank you! In this regard, Alawa, Ainaechoiriel, HF, Thundera Tiger, and especially Altariel and Isabeau of Greenlea deserve special thanks for their help, but I'm sure I'm forgetting people. If you are one of those whom I have overlooked, I apologize. Know that your help did make a difference.

Finally, thank you Raksha, Patti and Altariel for reader feedback on the first-published ending that prompted me to return to the original design of two epilogues. I hope this is clearer and that you can all forgive my regression to being a twelve year-old who loved "Choose Your Own Adventure" books.
