Words Not Spoken

1. Words Not Spoken

It wasn’t until the hour before they were wed that Galadriel realized that, between the two of them, the question had never been asked.

Though Celeborn had been her lover for many years, which for an elf could mean anywhere from decades to centuries, the topic of marriage had simply never been brought up. There had always been an implicit understanding that someday, in either the near or distant future, they would be bound together for the rest of eternity; no words had ever been required.

Will you marry me?… Yes, those were the words that should have been spoken, Galadriel reflected grimly. She didn’t consider herself to be a romantic, nor had she ever been, but this sort of thing had to be done properly. There were traditions regarding marriage that ought to be followed, whether one was an Elf or a Man or a Dwarf.

She remembered hearing from her brother that when mortals became betrothed, it was generally the man that asked the woman. But Elves and Men differed in many ways, this being one of them, and had she felt it necessary she would have proposed herself. Yet the empathy between them was so strong as to create the illusion that any thought that passed between them had been carried into word and deed.

Celeborn, sensing her anxiety from the other room, materialized in the open door of her chamber. “What is wrong, my love?” He glided to her side and stroked her hair. “Surely you are not nervous?”

She seemed to ignore him. “Did you never truly propose?”

He smiled softly, unperturbed by her frankness. “Of course I did, though you would not have known it at the time: I spoke in Dwarvish.”

A soft sigh escaped her lips. “You know naught of that tongue, and now is not the time for jest.”

His smile widened to a grin. “But I can think of no better time for merriment than a wedding!” Before she could begin to glower, he kissed her forehead. As he drew away, the mirth faded from his face. “In all seriousness, had I known it to be of such import to you, I would have asked for your hand in marriage years ago. I assumed wrongly that my feelings for you spoke for me. Why have you not brought it up before?”

Galadriel turned away. “In truth, it had not come to my mind until now,” she said, laughing a bit at herself. “In fact, I am not entirely sure how this wedding came to be arranged.”

She felt her lover’s arms wrap round her waist, and he spoke softly in her ear. “Then let us consider it to be a miracle, for such a ceremony to be arranged with neither party’s explicit consent.” He turned her around to face him. “But if it is truly what you want…”

She put a finger to his lips. “Will you marry me?”

Celeborn raised an eyebrow. “And now you ask?”

“I’ll take that as a ‘yes’.” And Galadriel smiled.
