How Do I Love Thee Challenge

As We Feel

4. Fickleness

From Fíriel to Arvedui

How little do we seem to know of fate, and yet
its fickleness amuses all our thoughts the more;
for even though we've not believed such tales of old,
The same hand writes our own without our will and wont.

Reluctant had I been to stay with you, my lord;
And I know more reluctant you had never been.
But fate that seals the hearts sealed this alliance still
‘Twas thus we lost the privilege to choose by will.

Such bitter tears I shed, but what is past is gone;
And as I now reflect, how foolish, vain and wrong
Was I. For your sweet hand has drawn away my faults
Shaping my life anew- by gentle grace ‘tis done.

As now you stand before me, kingly sort of man
I sing my praise to fate that brought you to my side.
If ever must my road from your path sundered be
Know this: I will return in haste for you, my love.
