'The key!' shouted Bilbo. 'The key that went with the map! Try it now while there is still time!'
Then Thorin stepped up and drew the key on its chain from round his neck. He put it to the hole. It fitted and it turned! ...
Now they all pushed together, and slowly a part of the rock-wall gave way. ... A door five feet high and three broad was outlined, and slowly without a sound swung inwards.

The dragon came.
They had barely time to fly back to the tunnel, pulling and dragging in their bundles, when Smaug came hurtling from the North, licking the mountain-sides with flame, beating his great wings with a noise like a roaring wind. His hot breath shrivelled the grass before the door, and drove in through the crack they had left and scorched them as they lay hid. Flickering fires leaped up and black rock-shadows danced. Then darkness fell as he passed again. ...
They crept further down the tunnel, and there they lay and shivered though it was warm and stuffy, until dawn came pale through the crack of the door. Every now and again through the night they could hear the roar of the flying dragon grow and then pass and fade, as he hunted round and round the mountain-sides.

[A note on the date: the year is canon, but the day is an estimate by Fonstadt from her book: The Atlas of Middle-earth, Revised Edition, by Karen Wynn Fonstad, Section 5, The Hobbit: Introduction. The date is set to when Thorin apparently entered through the secret door into the Lonely Mountain for the first time, which is the day following Fonstadt's estimate for Durin's Day.]
