Timeline Event
Tar-Atanamir, King of Númenor, dies
Meaning: The Jewel of Mankind
Event Type: Genealogical
Age: 2nd Age - Rings
Year: 2251
Description:
There is a date discrepancy here, with UT giving the date of death as 2221, and Appendix B of RotK giving the date of accession as 2251. "2251 Tar-Atanamir takes the sceptre. Rebellion and division of the Númenoreans begins." In note 10 of The Line of Elros: Kings of Numenor, Christopher Tolkien indicates that the 2251 should be the correct date of death, and the Appendix entry should read: "2251 Death of Tar-Atanamir. Tar-Ancalimon takes the sceptre. Rebellion and division of the Númenoreans begins." He points out that this is supported by the Akallabêth where is said that the division began in the time of Tar-Ancalimon.
"Atanamir is called also the Unwilling, for he was the first of the Kings to refuse to lay down his life, or to renounce the sceptre; and he lived until death took him perforce in dotage.
Unfinished Tales, Part 2, Ch III, The Line of Elros: Kings of Numenor
"And Atanamir lived to a great age, clinging to his life beyond the end of all joy; and he was the first of the Númenóreans to do this, refusing to depart until he was witless and unmanned, and denying to his son the kingship at the height of his days."
Silmarillion, Akallabêth
