Filks - warning, here be there monsters

I don't filk often (at least not in public), but when I do, it tends to be weird. As evidence, I present this latest effort. I'd like to dedicate it to Marta, for suggesting a filk contest in which only songs from musicals or movies were eligible. Knights of the King's Stables.

Re: Filks - warning, here be there monsters

it tends to be weird.

But wonderful!

Thanks, Dwim, that was great.

Re: Filks - warning, here be there monsters

You're welcome, Gwynnyd! I'm glad you liked it. Edit: Ok, why are we suddenly in italics?

Re: Filks - warning, here be there monsters

Dwim, this was perfect. Spot on. It really fit the Rohirrim. I notice that prospective challenges has 2700 posts. A nice round number, but I think I'll bump it up to 2701. We're half-way to a challenge... Marta Edit: I guess I wasn't thinking clearly when I wrote that. Hopefully it's coherent now! Also, it was the birthday drabbles forum, not prospective challenges that had 2700 posts. Anyway, I've posted to PC, and hopefully my English makes sense.

Dwim, this was perfect point Glad you liked it. Thanks for the restriction, as it got my brain going in this... er... direction.

Re: Filks - warning, here be there monsters

Ang said this is a bug...

I've been noticing a bug in the editor. If you use a block quote *and* italics, the post puts a bogus self-closing emphasis tag at the end of your post. I'm using square brackets so you can see what happens:

[blockquote] [em] Valid italics tag surrounding text which is indented. [/em] [/blockquote]

[p] Another line or two ofnon-indented text , followed by a closed paragraph tag and then a BOGUS italics tag.[/p] [em /]

See that last "em" followed by a backslash? That's the broken tag which causes everything after it to go cattywampus. I've seen it with bold tags and font color tags, too. It seems to happen most often when using the blockqoute/indent buttons.

I'm in talks with someone to take on the task of Forums Manager to help fix the occasional HTML issues.

I think I fixed it in my post now.

Re: Filks - warning, here be there monsters

Ah, thank you, Gwynnyd. Usually, I just insert an end-italics tag, and that fixes things until the original poster can change his/her code. Couldn't figure out why it wasn't working!

Re: Filks - warning, here be there monsters

And one more for your entertainment. Now with tags to get that proper fifties sock-hop feel to it.

Last night's madness

Summary: Halbarad's a bit tired of always languishing unsung in the shadows while the man he guards gets all the glory. He's good enough, he's dour-handed enough, and gosh darn it, people (should) like him!

Disclaimers: I'm sorry, Mr. Simon, I really am. You wrote a fabulous song that brought me many hours of joy. I'm sure you'd not say the same of the spoof below.

Warning: Do not, under any circumstances, try to envision Halbarad as Chevy Chase. That's Aragorn's role.

You Can Call Me Hal (Or: The Song of the Sidekick)

A man walks down the street,
He says, Why am I playin' second fiddle, eh?
Why am I playin' second fiddle?
Being a Ranger's so hard!
I need a golden opportunity,
I want a shot at recognition!
Don't want to end up nameless,
In the Appendix graveyard .....

Arnor, Arnor,
Wargs in the moonlight.
Far away, all well-lit doors.
Mr. Butterburr, Butterburr,
Get your mutts away from me!
You know, I don't find this stuff amusing anymore ....

I'm your unsung bodyguard,
You can be my well-known pal!
I can call you Strider,
And Strider, when you need me,
You can call me Hal!

A man walks down the street,
He says, Why am I short appreciation?
Yeah, I'm short appreciation
And whoa, my walks are so long!
Where's my wife and family?
What if I die here?
Who'll be my sword-brother?
Now that my sword-brother's ....
Gone , gone,
He ducked back down the alley,
With some roly-poly little Underhill
All along along
There were incidents and accidents,
There were some predestinations .....

I'm your unsung bodyguard,
You can be my well-known pal!
I can call you Strider,
And Strider, when you need me,
You can call me Hal!
Call me Hal.

[Cue Grey Company fifist]

A man runs down the street,
It's a street in a strange world.
Maybe it's the Third Age.
Maybe it's his first time around.
Though he holds the standard,
He holds no captaincy.
He is a grave man,
He is surrounded by the sound, the sound
Battle in the harbor quays.
Easterlings and dwimmerlaiks.
He looks around, around
He sees fell beasts on the architecture,
Golden opportunity...
He says, Hey, I was kidding, you know!

I'm your unsung bodyguard,
You can be my well-known pal!
I can call you Strider,
And Strider, when you need me,
You can call me Hal!
Call me

Na na na na …

[Cue Grey Company on drums and humming]
[Cue cool bass solo]

I'm your unsung bodyguard,

[Ooh-ay Ooh-ay Ooh-ay Ooh-ay Ooh-ay Oooo]

I can call you Strider.

[Oo-ay Oo-oh Ooooo]

I'm your unsung bodyguard,

[Ooh-ay Ooh-ay Ooh-ay Ooh-ay Ooh-ay Oooo]

I can call you Strider.

[Oo-ay Oo-oh Ooooo]

[fade out]

Re: Last night's madness

I like. You need to write more at night. This is so perfect and fits Hal perfectly.

Re: Last night's madness

You need to write more at night.

Dementia becomes me, does it? ;-)

This is so perfect and fits Hal perfectly.

I'd blame the fact that Tolkien didn't include him in that lament for this, but really, it'd be a patent excuse for the filk muse, which just likes doing stuff like this.

Glad you liked it, RiverOtter!

Re: Last night's madness

Hm. I seem to be composing in purple. Novel! I think there must be a tag open somewhere...

In any case, I hope the medic arrived soon enough to prevent you from expiring, Silli!

With These Dudes?

This is what grading papers does to your brain.

Dwim

With these dudes?

Because crossing "The Hobbit" with a song entitled "In These Shoes" was entirely too bizarre to be left unwritten.

Bilbo: I once met a man on a dwarvish adventure
He was dressed in grey wherever he went.
He said, "Let’s go quest for great Erebor,
Under the hills to a dragon's hoard."
I said, "With these dudes?
I don’t think so."
I said, "Gandalf, let’s stay right here."

So I’m sitting in the rain in Eriador when
Up comes Thorin with a too-clever look in his eyes.
He said, "There's some nasty old trolls hard by.
Sneak to their camp, slip in on the sly,
I know they've got some food, you can steal it and then break away."
I said, "From these dudes?
No way, jose."
I said, "Thorin, let's stay right here."

Spotlight on Dwarven chorus, cue Balin on trumpet

Thorin and Co.: No le gusta caminar. No puede montar a caballo.
Cómo se puede robar? Es un escandalo!

Bilbo: When I found the dwarves' old door
"Oh," they said;
"Won't you walk down to Smaug and spy?
From this task your contract derives."
I said, "On this dude?
I doubt I’d survive."
I said, "Gentlemen, I'll do it.
Just stay right here."

Thorin and Co.: No le gusta caminar. No puede montar a caballo.
Cómo se puede robar? Es un escandalo!

No le gusta caminar. No puede montar a caballo.
Cómo se puede robar? Es un escandalo!

No le gusta caminar. No puede montar a caballo.
Cómo se puede robar? Es un escandalo!

Bilbo: Just stay right here.

Thorin and Co.: No le gusta caminar. No puede montar a caballo.
Cómo se puede robar?

Kirsty MacColl's lyrics for "In These Shoes" are here.

No le gusta caminar. No puede montar a caballo.
Cómo se puede robar? Es un escandalo!

'He doesn't like to walk. He can't mount a horse.
But the way he thieves? It's a scandal!'

Note: The one substitution I made in the Spanish chorus was facilitated by an online English-Spanish dictionary, which I hope gave me the right word, porque no hablo espanol.
