I have scoured the appendices, Unfinished Tales, etc., to try to pin down the year when Elfhild died. Theodred can be calculated to have been born in 2978 (via reference to the difference in age between himself and Eomer in UT), so she was alive at least until then. She has died by the time Eomer & Eown came to Edoras (2003), and probably some time sooner than that. Encyclopedia of Arda asserts that "At the time of the War of the Ring, Rohan had been without a queen for forty years."However, I can find no evidence for EoA's claim of forty years. This would put her death in 2979, perhaps 2978. With the earlier date, she would have died bearing Theodred. With the later one, she might have died with her second child.
Any more definitive evidence? Any opinions?

I always assumed that Elfhild died when Théodred was born. With no mention of any other child, I thought that was the best assumption:
He [King Théoden] had only one child of his own, Théodred his son, then twenty-four years old; for the queen Elfhild had died in childbirth, and Théoden did not wed again.

Which is why I set the date of the event to 2978.
