I recently saw the movie TTT, where Cirith Ungol leaped vividly into my mind. So, this would be an alternative universe -challenge, where the story ends, unhappily, before Frodo and Sam get into Mordor.
The options are many - what if Sam had died? Succumbed to the ring? Or even before; we see Shelob's lair, and a pitiful echo from Silmarillian days: The giant spider monster speaks to Gollum:
'Give me with both hands...'
In one hand he has a bone, in the other, the Ring...

Oh, I don't know. Just me and my twisted stories again.
