A stone-- a whetstone-- is a particular kind of stone with a fine texture. You oil the stone and use it to smooth out nicks from the edge of the blade, and sharpen the edge, and smooth out scratches.
But even simply handling the blade will result in fingerprints if it is not kept cleaned and oiled.
Blood is particularly bad for swords, and so they must be assiduously scoured after battle.
