Discussing: Query

Apologies if I have posted this in the wrong forum, but...

Did Tolkien ever explicitly say how dragons are born?

Eggs, live birth, the stork leaves them under a gooseberry bush... anyone?

Re: Query

Off the top of my head - i.e. without dragging out Letters and most of History of Middle-earth - not in so many words, except for the mechanical(!) dragons in the Book of Lost Tales.

Generally, though, dragons being considered reptilian, I think you can't go wrong with egg-laying, although the PoV of a stork having to bring a live young dragonet might be entertaining... (perhaps a Dale children's story?)

But this is before my second cup of coffee, so someone else may be able to shed more light on it.

Re: Query

Many thanks, Nath- here's hoping that my latest story ("Here Be Dragons") was worth your effort.

Re: Query

I quite enjoyed the result, yes *g*
