In Tolkien, the race of a character is used as shorthand for the character's temperament, alignment, and habits. With very few exceptions, characters of the same race behave in a similar fashion, and are automatically categorized as "good" or "evil."
Set a story in Middle-Earth and describe characters of any race, as long as you leave out which race they are. How does Tolkien's world appear?
Your work can be canonical or non-canonical, short or long, AU or non-AU, and in any medium. Your characters can be OCs or canon characters, but if they are canon, one suggestion is to change or use less well-known versions of their names so that they are effectively re-introduced to the reader.
