OK, an OFC or a minor, undiscussed canonical female -that's clear.

Must it be from *her* POV? May other character's POVs be introduced? What about the main canon character - can his POV figure in the story?

I'm getting bitten by a very big Gilda bug right now (down, damn it! You're worse than a NYC coackroach!) and I need to know if I can turn aside the beastie before the damage is too great.

No. The rules of the challenge state only that she must be one of the main characters and that the plot has to hinge on the romance. Hence Mike's Miriel is fine, because even though her viewpoint is one of many, she is one of the main characters and the plot hinges on her painful love affair with Denethor.

Write away, Ang. Surrender to the dark side--ultimately, it's less costly in terms of bug spray. Give us Gilda in her glory years.

The Mistress - Bilbo and Gilda's romance from their first meeting at the Old Took's last birthday party to the morning a wizard shows up on a certain doorstep in Hobbiton - about 20 years.

Guest appearances by Belladonna, Mirabella, Donnamira, Fortinbras, Laila The Great, Drogo, and Rory. And possibly Bungo. And the whole panoply of siblings, cousins, neighbors and other hangers on, of course.

Sigh. I'll get to Denethor someday. Really I will.

I keep wondering how you manage to feed the horde of Hobbits that live at your place. Hobbits consume a lot of provender. Do you cook everything in 20 liter pans?

 

Cook? In Southern California? Hon - it is all take-out from El Cuervo. Great fish tacos, carnitas and tacos al pastore.

Gollum take his fish tacos raw, hold the special sauce, of course:

I also have a question. The challenge is to pair an OFC with a main canon character. Does the main canon character have to be male?

I know that traditionally Mary Sues exist solely in the domain of het fanfic, but I assume a challenge entry pairing Eowyn with an OFC would be acceptable?

I'm not actually sure about entering, but I am working on an Eowyn story that involves a slash encounter. I thought it might be suitable for this challenge. Whether it will ever see the light of day is yet to be seen!

Newbie here, by the way, contemplating my first fully-fledged LOTR fic...

 

I can't see anything in the challenge that says the canon character has to be male, and I would love to see more femslash.

 

Thanks for the second opinion! And yeah, from what I've seen, there seems to be a general lack of it over the entire fandom. Which is a shame.

 

Due, no doubt, to the relative dearth of major female characters who could be paired with even remote plausibility. For one thing, most of them are married!

But I agree that there's nothing that says an Eowyn/OFC story wouldn't fit in this Challenge.
