We Wants It
The more often I read LOTR, the more I am affected by Gollum's story and by his role in the quest. This moment on the stairs of Cirith Ungol is, to my mind, the most tragic moment in the book. What if Frodo had woken, not Sam? What if Sam had held his tongue? Even more, what was Gollum thinking? What is it that he wants?
Re: We Wants It
I was going to do a rec. on this story, but apparently since it's currently in review status I can't. Guess I'll just have to wait...
*shivers*
It really does capture Gollum's POV - and I'm profoundly glad you wrote it, because otherwise I'd have had to try, and channeling Gollum would have squicked me out big time.

Re: We Wants It
If the Ring is the concentration of Sauron's will, and if that will is the will to possess all that is (dominate it, subjugate it), then what I see in Gollum is the inability anymore to do anything except want. That is what the Ring has irrevocably done to him. What Frodo (and Sam) do to Gollum - finally being among his own kind for the first time in hundreds of years - is make him want something for the sake of someone else. He still cannot view anything outside the prism of what he wants for himself, but he can want for Frodo. No spider, no orcs, no Eye. It is the only way left to Gollum to grasp what is around him.
Or so I have been thinking. I'm a bit worried in the movie that Gollum will be wholly evil, or the Hobbit part of him treated so slightly that there can be no pity for him. That would be a great distortion. I'm heartened by how sympathetic PJ made Boromir, especially in the longer version. And the discussion in Moria about Bilo's pity was promising. [Rubs hands briskly] Can't wait to see!
