Water, The

Region: Bree/The Shire
Location: A small stream which starts in the north west of the shire, turning almost due east to run through the approximate center of the Shire; eventually joining the Brandywine.
Description: The Water runs by the southern edge of The Hill which contains the tunnels comprising Bag End. At this point it powers the mill at Hobbiton. Further east the stream widens out into Bywater Pool.
"After some time they crossed the Water, west of Hobbiton, by a narrow
plank-bridge. The stream was there no more than a winding black ribbon, bordered with leaning alder-trees."

Farmer Cotton bemoans the damage to the Shire, saying that the ruffians, "... pour out filth a purpose; they’ve fouled all the lower Water and it’s getting down into Brandywine. If they want to make the Shire into a desert, they’re going the right way about it."
