the Old Mill
the mill at Hobbiton
'[This] blind dark seems to be getting into my heart. As I lay in prison..., I tried to remember ... The Water running through the mill at Hobbiton. But I can't see them now.'
The Return of the King, LoTR Book 6, Ch 2, The Land of Shadow
[The] Mirror grew grey, and then clear. There was sun shining, and the branches of trees were waving and tossing in the wind. But before Sam could make up his mind what it was that he saw, the light faded.... Like a dream the vision shifted and went back, and he saw the trees again. But this time they were not so close, and he could see what was going on: they were not waving in the wind, they were falling, crashing to the ground.
'Hi!' cried Sam in an outraged voice. 'There's that Ted Sandyman a-cutting down trees as he shouldn't. They didn't ought to be felled: it's that avenue beyond the Mill that shades the road to Bywater.' ...
But now Sam noticed that the Old Mill had vanished, and a large red-brick building was being put up where it had stood.
The Fellowship of the Ring, LoTR Book 2, Ch 7, The Mirror of Galadriel
'It all began with Pimple, as we call him,' said Farmer Cotton ... [He] already did own a sight more than was good for him; and he was always grabbing more.... He'd already bought Sandyman's mill before he came to Bag End, seemingly. ...
'Take Sandyman's mill now. Pimple knocked it down almost as soon as he came to Bag End. Then he brought in a lot o' dirty-looking Men to build a bigger one and fill it full o' wheels and outlandish contraptions.'
