- Included Because: Quite possibly the best Legolas-Gimli friendship fic I have ever read. It has the length to really dig into issues of hostility and difference, and to let this rocky relationship develop. It doesn't ignore the fact that Legolas and Gimli become friends among the Fellowship. And it's just well-written to boot. Read this fic if you love L & G, you won't regret it.

- Included Because: This story made me cry. This is angst done right for Legolas and Gimli, and a fitting depiction of their friendship at the end of Gimli's life.

- 3. Of Elves and Dwarves and Late Night Philosophy

- Included Because: Actually, I'm recommending this because I can't resist a story that has any two characters asking about the origin of evil and approaching it from the question of what comes first, the feeling of evil or evil itself. The answer isn't nearly as obvious as one might think. But in terms of the purpose of this playlist, here we do see Legolas and Gimli engaged in a more serious and sustained mode of banter than the usual one-liners.

- Included Because: Until recently, this story was unchallenged as the most convincing Legolas/Gimli slash I had ever read. The angst doesn't go overboard, and was much relieved by that final verbal exchange.

- Included Because: Bit of a sidetrack, here, but for a truly heroic effort to make poor movie!Gimli something other than pure comic relief, this story must be noted. Here, Legolas and Gimli are already friends, but that doesn't mean Legolas understands Gimli perfectly.

- Included Because: Probably one of the best fics dealing with the decision of Legolas and Gimli to sail for Valinor in terms of emotional impact. Their grief is well-portrayed.

- Included Because: What kind of people bond over counting the individual enemies they've killed? Legolas' first perception of worth in Gimli leaves one feeling slightly chilled.

- 8. Time and Times and Half a Time, A

- Included Because: Gimli's characterization is perfect; Legolas' dependence on his friend is well-written without being sappy or overdone. This is angst that works, but which could easily have slid over into catastrophe. It avoids by the skin of its teeth being a pointless torture fic thanks to the ambiguity of Legolas' situation, the meaning of which renders Saruman's "victory" subject to debate.

- Included Because: The uniquely elven time sense is given its proper meaning in Gimli's reflections on Legolas, which highlights the extent to which Legolas is fundamentally affected by his mortal friendships.
