Frodo falls at the Ford of Bruinen
Event Type: Environment/Disease
Age: 3rd Age - Ring War
Date: October 20, 3018
Description:
An event in the Ambush at the Ford of Bruinen and the aftermath of the Attack on the Camp at Weathertop; see those entries for an overview.
Then the leader, who was now half across the Ford, stood up menacing in his stirrups, and raised up his hand. Frodo was stricken dumb. He felt his tongue cleave to his mouth, and his heart labouring. His sword broke and fell out of his shaking hand. The elf-horse reared and snorted....
At that moment there came a roaring.... Dimly Frodo saw the river below him rise....
With his last failing senses 1 Frodo heard cries, and it seemed to him that he saw... a shining figure of white light; and... small shadowy forms waving flames, that flared red in the grey mist that was falling over the world....
Then Frodo felt himself falling, and the roaring and confusion seemed to rise and engulf him together with his enemies. He heard and saw no more.
The Fellowship of the Ring, LoTR Book 1, Ch 12, Flight to the Ford
'Your friends crossed after the flood had passed; and they found you lying on your face at the top of the bank, with a broken sword under you. The horse was standing guard beside you. You were pale and cold, and they feared that you were dead, or worse. Elrond's folk met them, carrying you slowly towards Rivendell.'
The Fellowship of the Ring, LoTR Book 2, Ch 1, Many Meetings
Notes
1 'You were beginning to fade,' [said] Gandalf. 'The wound was overcoming you at last. A few more hours and you would have been beyond our aid.'
