Death Down, The

Type: Other Constructions

Region: Rohan

Location: A huge burial mound in the Deeping-coomb delved by the Huorns for the Orcs killed in the Battle of the Hornburg.

Description: ... a mile below the Dike a huge pit had been delved in the earth, and over it stones were piled into a hill. Men believed that the Orcs whom they had slain were buried there; but whether those who had fled into the wood were with them, none could say, for no man ever set foot upon that hill. The Death Down it was afterwards called, and no grass would grow there. But the strange trees were never seen in Deeping-coomb again....

The Two Towers, LoTR Book 3, Ch 8, The Road to Isengard

For a while the three companions walked together ... and they went down from the broken gate, and passed the mounds of the fallen on the greensward beside the road, until they stood on Helm's Dike and looked into the Coomb. The Death Down already stood there, black and tall and stony, and the great trampling and scoring of the grass by the Huorns could be plainly seen.
