Whitwell

Type: Cities, Towns, Settlements

Region: Bree/The Shire

Location: A farming village in the Tookland; original home of Thain Paladin Took II and his son, Peregrin I (Pippin).

Description:

'Oh come!' said the lad.... '[How] old are you, and what is your name?.... What is your father?'

'Which question shall I answer first?' said Pippin. 'My father farms the lands round Whitwell 1 near Tuckborough in the Shire.'

The Return of the King, LoTR Book 5, Ch 1, Minas Tirith

Etymology
Whitfurrows (in the Shire). Translate by sense, whit- being the usual shortening of white in personal names (Whitlock) and local names (Whitley). Compare Whitfoot. Similarly Whitwell in the Shire (an actual English place-name). The reference in English place-names is usually to the colour of the soil.

Notes
1Pippin's father, Paladin Took II, had in fact assumed the office of Thain in 3015, four years prior to this conversation; he was therefore somewhat more prominent in the Shire than Pippin acknowledged to Bergil.
