Unfair

Oh, how fascinating, Ang! I have seen stories about Lobelia, but nothing about Otho....
Lobelia's reaction to her shaming seems so in-character for the bitter person we've seen much later, but you paint Otho in a very sympathetic light here... and both characterizations seem so natural; they work very well.
I especially liked how you grab our attention at the beginning with Lobelia's harrumphing, but only slowly unveil what caused her disgrace... pulling us into the shame and secrecy as we read.
Well done!

Hi Barbara,
Glad you like it!
Unfair came out of the notes I wrote to establish the back story for Legacy and On Merry Yule, especially the latter. There is an oblique reference to the events of this story in one of the last chapters of OMY.
I find I liked Otho, and frankly Lobelia, more as I worked on the ideas for the other stories. I'm impressed by Lobelia's gumption (Can't you just imagine her giving a ruffian a thwack with her umbrella?) and I'd like to think that Otho was both kinder and more interesting than most interpretations would have him be. I want him to be more a Baggins than anything else.
Thanks for the comment - Ang
