10. In the Midst - Edoraslass

Her pregnancy had been fraught with difficulty, and we could not allow her to be evacuated without risk to both mother and child.

She has been in labour for hours, too many hours. Her stifled screams occasionally drift into the main room, and a number of the men have taken to asking after her, as if childbirth were a wound more dire than those which many of them bear.

The ringing, somehow defiant blast of a horn comes from the Field while I am stitching a soldier’s leg, and it is followed by the distant sounds of terrible, fierce singing.

An amazed hush falls over the Houses, roof to foundation.

A high, outraged shriek breaks the silence, startling all for a moment, then the midwife’s assistant appears in the doorway, tired but beaming. “It is a boy, and she has named him Estel!”

A great cheer erupts from the injured, and for the first time in days, I feel that all is not lost.

In the midst of death, life. In the midst of despair, hope.

Is it your birthday? Then come, give us a theme, and we'll give you a drabble! Your theme could be very specific ("Black Riders on Weathertop!") or rather broad ("Something about singing in Middle-earth") or it could be a question—you choose. Please post your "birthday card" theme under the month you were born in and don't hesitate to let the list know.

Note:For any thread that has fifty posts, please start a new thread. Copy-paste the first posting (with all the requests) of the old thread and use that as the first post of the new thread. The next reply will then be in response to whatever you were originally going to respond to. This is to keep the threads relatively fast-loading and easy to read. Thank you.

Advisory: Please use your judgment in reading. Some members, having achieved official maturity, may request a birthday card not suitable for those still in their troubled Tweens.

Beginning in May 2005 Birthday Drabbles can be collected by Birthday Person in the Birthday Cards Workshop and enjoyed together rather than having to be searched for down the threads.
