Sam whipped round at the quiet cough behind him. He blushed when he saw Elrond’s gaze settle pointedly on the knife he held.

“Begging your pardon, Master Elrond. I couldn’t help myself. You have a deal of fine herbs and suchlike here, but they’re in sore need of pruning, if I may be so bold.”

Elrond smiled. “Yes, Sam, they have been badly neglected.” He sighed and glanced around the terraces that glowed warmly in the late autumn sun. “Too many other cares.” He lifted his hand to reveal his own pruning knife. “I would be delighted to assist you.”
