2. The Sins of the Father

Gandalf led Aragorn to Faramir’s bedside. The young man lay, burning with fever, insensible to the world around him, oppressed by the Black Breath of the Nazgul. He was being dragged down into the shadow world, Aragorn knew.

He had been told how Faramir had volunteered for a suicide mission, in order to earn the love of the man he called father. Denethor had ordered him to his death, and now here he lay.

Aragorn took the young man’s hand and looked into his pale face. He looked a great deal like his poor mother. Denethor’s hatred had killed her, and now it had driven Faramir to the brink of death. The Steward had never loved him, but Aragorn was the only man yet living who understood why.

He crushed the Athelas leaves in the steaming water, and bowed his head. “Don’t let this man die for my crime. Let him be spared.”

He laid a hand on Faramir’s brow, and entered in to his darkness, calling as to one lost, “Faramir, Faramir! Come back to the light. Come back to me, my son.”

Author's note regarding chronology: In this story, Faramir would have been born about three years earlier than in the Canon chronology of Appendix B, Tale of Years.
