1. The Hawk Under The Eagle's Foot

Into the palantiri; with a purpose one may bend the stone to his will; but even when control is gone, the mind wields the stone, not the stone the wielder. Then the deepest desires and deepest fears are revealed; futures that may come to be or may not are shown. To the fearful and the fearless are shown terror, but the jealous, the prideful, and the bereft are shown power, and love is shown to the loving, the loveless, and the longing.

What dreams come to the Tower of Orthanc? There is power there, but it is not the most powerful in Arda. There is wisdom there, and strength, but nor is it the most wise, or the strongest. What desires come to the Tower of Orthanc?

White hands lovingly caressing the smooth, black stone; visions of power drunken down deep. Promises of greater strength to come, sweet murmuring of how to gain that strength, whispered reassurances of justification. Slowly greed erodes the walls of the mind, staining light with darkness, so ambition’s poisonous touch steadily takes hold of the once bright soul.
