23. Day 24: One Day at a Time (Boromir and cameos by several family members)
"I want to be big and strong!" Boromir said. "It's no fun being a little boy."
"Eat your vegetables, and you will grow tall and strong like your father," Nirwen, his nurse, said. Boromir frowned.
"I want to be big and strong!" Boromir said as he watched his uncle practice his fencing. "You can't do anything when you are only a little boy."
"Just you wait," grinned his Uncle Imrahil as he scooped him up into his arms. "Everyone grows up and, when you do, you'll have such fun!"
"Do not encourage the boy," Andrahar admonished; then, fixing Boromir with a stern stare, "Do not be in such a hurry to grow up, lad. Life will start sending sandstorms your way, soon enough."
"Do not frighten the boy," his Grandfather Adrahil said, with the hint of a glare. "If you prepare like you should, the future will be, indeed, worth living--no matter the sandstorms."
"I want to be big and strong!" Boromir said. "I want to be a soldier and fight for Gondor."
"So you shall," said his father, beaming with pride. "Every day you will become stronger and wiser, until none will surpass you."
Boromir crossed his arms over his chest, unconvinced.
Later that day, Finduilas found him sitting with his head between his knees.
"What is the matter, love?" she asked. Boromir looked up, eyes shining between strands of raven hair.
"I don't want to be a little boy!" he cried. "They all said I will grow up, but I want to be big now! Little boys have no fun."
Finduilas sat next to him, thinking. At the sight of his brother, baby Faramir began to wriggle out of his swaddle to reach for Boromir's fingers.
"I tell you what--" Finduilas said, pulling Boromir close. "Let us get Faramir fed and abed, and you and I shall plan a campaign with your wooden rangers. If you are to do all that growing and all that fighting, you will need plenty of practice."
Boromir grinned and jumped up at once.
