Ah, Pip! I should never have let you come, never have agreed to your eager suggestion to join me on my walk from Hobbiton to Crickhollow, for that was how it started, wasn't it—all those months ago. You are too young to die here in this awful place, torn by tooth and claw. You're just a lad, and I'll be responsible if something happens… But now look at you, my young proud Took: trying so valiantly to still your trembling, holding your head high, shoulders back, determined to hide your terror… That's a kind of courage, too, isn't it?
