A single speck of snow; that's all it was.

 No-one worried about it.

 There had been snowfall in early Blotmath before, after all- there had been snowfall in Winterfilth before, there had even been snow in Halimath before...

 So no-one worried about it.

 Yes, it had been chillier than usual, but no-one worried about that except for old soldiers who grumbled about their aching bones.

 Yes, there had been more berries on the bushes than usual, but no-one worried about that except for those who believed in old wives' tales.

 Yes, the swallows had been seen flying from the eaves of Meduseld far earlier than any year in living memory, but no-one worried about that except for the soothsayers, and no-one trusted their judgement without a healthy dose of scepticism.

 So the snowflake fell, silent and solitary and serene, and no-one worried about it.

 Perhaps they should have done…
