Hamster, The
Raksha The Demon - 17 Aug 06 - 8:50 PM
Sigh. I love this poem! It's so perfect! I can just see Denethor obsessing about a small pet hamster that he'd named "Thorongil"...And hamsters are nocturnal, wheel-turning, critters.
A wonderful, satirical, combination of Poe, Tolkien, and Dwimordene.

It's all about transference. ;-)

Thanks, Raksha! I had entirely too much fun writing this; I'm pleased you found it an enjoyable read.

Hadn't read this for an Age, but then Marta linked back to it in a birthday post on LJ...
and since our children have recently acquired a hamster (and we had to get up at 2 am on his third night with us and take some bike-oil to his squeaky wheel) I had to re-read it. And am giggling helplessly. Yes, ours manages to beguile me to waste a good deal of time watching him wandering beady-eyed round his domicile, too...

OMG. 'Sir', I'd said, 'or Madam, truly I am not versed in hamster "lore";
Nor care I to risk your biting simply so's to gain a sighting
Of your underside for tidings of your gender that I should ignore...
Now you've made me snort my coffee!

Marta was right in her recommendation! But I didn't appreciate how glorious a piece this is until I saw how the bit she quoted fits into the whole.
