>>I look not above but toward the horizon

I very much like this interpretation of Elrond's relationship with Maglor and Maedhros - and with his parents.  (Of course, I like it most because I agree with it!)  I do think it was Tolkien's intention to portray the fostering of Elrond and Elros as kindly and nurturing.  Interestingly enough, Elrond's story recalls Tolkien's own youth - and he was certainly a doting father himself.  We may be too modernist in our interpretation of Elrond's feelings about his parents, but it is realistic to imagine that a child would not understand, and as an adult, he might be more charitable, but his affections remain those of the child.

I especially like the shining star image, and the meaning it holds for Elrond in this story.

Thanks for reading and commenting. I've gotten the full spectrum of comments on it. I know that I write in a modernist mode, but I like to play with character development. In this case I more or less took off from Tolkien's line "Maglor took pity upon Elros and Elrond, and he cherished them, and love grew after between them."

Ch. 1: My Shining Stars

How very "right" this sounds - children may love grand stories of heroic deeds - but it the one who cuddles them after telling the tale and insists on rules and lies in the kindest way (remember the Tooth Fairy?) about Big Things, that counts.

Thank you!

Ch. 1: My Shining Stars

Thank you so much for reading and commenting, Mistry. I am thrilled that it worked for you. For me, Elrond in later canon is the defense of what kind of an upbringing he had among the Feanorians.

Ch. 1: My Shining Stars

I think this is one of my favourite stories, that lovely glimpse of Maglor and Maedhros. Beautifully written as always, oshun.

Ch. 1: My Shining Stars

THis is lovely- I have always thought Elrond would love the sons of Feanor more than his own reckless parents who abandoned him. And he must be lonely. I like the comparison of his parenting with Feanors' methods.
