A Bit of Rope

Because Gandalf did not die, the Balrog poses threat to both Lorien and Mirkwood. What a dread truth for the Wizard to bear! And he intends to sacrifice himself for Frodo's sake, once it is asked of him.
No wonder Aragorn grieves now!

But of course Gandalf's a meddler! That's the business & purpose of Wizards, really. Though "Good", they use others as tools because it's necessary. As it is for all great lords.
I think Gandalf's character in this chapter was dead on, and thoroughly canonical.

How fun to awaken to a duel between readers over my particular "wasn't he supposed to be dead by now" Gandalf the Grey! Delicious -- both versions! Yep-- meddling old grump. Yep --uses others as necessary tools, 'cause that's what wizards do for a living. Excuse my wide grin while I enjoy your tiny spat on my behalf! IMMD!
