A Bit of Rope

I found this chaper immensley moving, Aiwendiel. The movement from the cold and calcuating torturer to the awakening of that memory and the kindness, the old fire in Sharkglub's spirit is a journey of tremendous imagination and vision. It could stand alone as a piece of fiction, worthy of any award. The control is in the intense focus on Sharkglub's pov and the gradual fear and shame and resentment. Just wonderful. And Gandalf's wonderful resistance and the reason he is able to resist makes such sense. You built up the sense of increasing desparation in the enemy too - and the contempt Shakglub has is enteriley in keeping with the truth about him (trying hard NOT to give spoilers). Just fabulous.

Hmm. It appears that someone is awakening, and now not unwillingly. I'm glad Gandalf was allowed this distraction--now to see the Elf awaken once more!
