The Combatants

The Combatants: Attacking Forces

... the fleets of the Númenóreans darkened the sea upon the west of the land, and they were like an archipelago of a thousand isles; their masts were as a forest upon the mountains, and their sails like a brooding cloud; and their banners were golden and black.

The Silmarillion, Akallabêth

The Combatants: Defensive Forces

But all that they did was known to Manwë, and the Valar were wroth with the Kings of Númenor, and gave them counsel and protection no more....

The Silmarillion, Akallabêth

Then Manwë ... called upon Ilúvatar, and for that time the Valar laid down their government of Arda.

The Prelude

... Ar-Pharazôn in the folly of his pride carried [Sauron] back as a prisoner to Númenor. It was not long before he had bewitched the King and was master of his counsel; and soon he had tamed the hearts of all the Númenoreans, except the remnant of the Faithful, back towards the darkness.

And Sauron lied to the King, declaring that everlasting life would be his who possessed the Undying Lands.... 'But great Kings take what is their right,' he said.

At length Ar-Pharazôn listened to this counsel, for he felt the waning of his days and was besotted by the fear of Death.

The Assault

[Ar-Pharazôn] prepared then the greatest armament that the world had seen, and when all was ready he sounded his trumpets and set sail; and he broke the Ban of the Valar, going up with war to wrest everlasting life from the Lords of the West. But when Ar-Pharazôn set foot upon the shores of Aman the Blessed, the Valar laid down their Guardianship and called upon the One....

The Return of the King, LoTR Appendix A, Annals of the Kings and Rulers: The Númenórean Kings

... Ilúvatar showed forth his power, and he changed the fashion of the world; and a great chasm opened in the sea between Númenor and the Deathless Lands.... And all the fleets of the Númenóreans were drawn down into the abyss, and they were drowned and swallowed up for ever. But Ar-Pharazôn the King and the mortal warriors that had set foot upon the land of Aman were buried under falling hills....

The Silmarillion, Akallabêth

The Aftermath

Númenor was thrown down and swallowed in the Sea, and the Undying Lands were removed for ever from the circles of the world.

The year is canon, but the dates are estimated, set to include the estimated date of the sailing of the Great Armament through Ar-Pharazôn lands on Aman and claims lordship, thirty-nine days later.
