Description:
Amras was the twin brother of Amrod.
According to the Shibboleth of Feanor (The Peoples of Middle-earth, HoMe 12, Last Writings) , they were both red-haired and much alike, though the elder, Amrod, grew darker in hair. Initially, their mother gave them both the same name, but on the insistence of Feanor she called one of them Umbarto ('Fated'), adding "but which, time will decide." When Feanor set fire to the swanships at Losgar, he inadvertently burned the younger of the twins, who was still aboard his ship - and so, it was Amras who turned out to be the fated one.
According to the 1977 Silmarillion (QS, Ch. 24 - Of the Voyage of Earendil and the War of Wrath), both twins were slain during the attack on the Havens of Sirion.
The favourite pastime of the twins was hunting (QS, Ch. 5 - Of Eldamar and the Princes of the Eldalië).
