Bagshot Row

Type: Buildings, Halls, Houses

Region: Bree/The Shire

Other Names New Row, Sharkey’s End

Location: Dug into the south side of The Hill which contained Bag End. The row was lower on The Hill than Bag End. Bagshot Row is known to be on the south side of the Hill based on the fact that the Party Field is "south of Bilbo's front door" and the Row is below that. FotR, Book I, Ch 1, A Long-expected Party

Description:

Three families are mentioned as living in Bagshot Row, but only the Gamgees are named.

"The three hobbit-families of Bagshot Row, adjoining the field, were intensely interested and generally envied. Old Gaffer Gamgee stopped even pretending to work in his garden." FotR, Book I, Ch 1, A Long-expected Party

"The poorer hobbits, and especially those of Bagshot Row, did very well." FotR, Book I, Ch 1, A Long-expected Party

During Saruman's control of the Shire, Bagshot Row was turned into " a yawning sand and gravel quarry." RotK, Book VI, Ch 8, The Scouring of the Shire "

'He's not too well, and not too bad, Sam,' said the farmer. 'They dug up Bagshot Row, and that was a sad blow to him.' " RotK, Book VI, Ch 8, The Scouring of the Shire

After the Scouring

"One of the first things done in Hobbiton, before even the removal of the new mill, was the clearing of the Hill and Bag End, and the restoration of Bagshot Row. The front of the new sand-pit was all levelled and made into a large sheltered garden, and new holes were dug in the southward face, back into the Hill, and they were lined with brick. The Gaffer was restored to Number Three; and he said often and did not care who heard it: 'It's an ill wind as blows nobody no good, as I always say. And All's well as ends Better!'

"There was some discussion of the name that the new row should be given. Battle Gardens was thought of, or Better Smials. But after a while in sensible hobbit-fashion it was just called New Row. It was a purely Bywater joke to refer to it as Sharkey's End." RotK, Book VI, Ch 9, The Grey Havens
