Description:
The Lord of Andúnië, Elendil and his family was banished to the eastern port of Rómenna when Ar-Pharazôn took the Sceptre of Númenor. Gathering the Faithful and their treasures aboard nine ships, Elendil escaped the Downfall with his sons and journeyed to Middle Earth, where he founded the city of Annúminas in the north and became the first king of Arnor and Gondor.
In 3430, Elendil joined the High King of the Noldor, Ereinion Gil-galad, at Amon Sûl and they established a Last Alliance of Elves and Men to defend Middle Earth against the evil of Sauron. Elendil died during the siege of Barad-dûr.
Elendil was unusually tall, above two rangar high, which put him above seven feet.
"Amandil and Elendil were great ship-captains; and they were of the line of Elros Tar-Minyatur, though not of the ruling house to whom belonged the crown and the throne in the city of Armenelos."
The Silmarillion, "Akallabêth."
Of the deeds of Ar-Pharazôn, ... more is told in the tale of the Downfall of Númenor, which Elendil wrote, and which was preserved in Gondor.

The statement that Elendil was the author of the Akallabêth is made only here. It is also said, elsewhere, that the story of Aldarion and Erendis, 'one of the few detailed histories preserved from Númenor', owed its preservation to its being of interest to Elendil.
