Timeline Event
Tar-Ancalimon becomes King of Númenor
Meaning: He who is Exceedingly Bright
Event Type: Political
Age: 2nd Age - Rings
Year: 2251
Description:
The same date discrepancy here as for the death of Tar-Atanamir, with UT giving the date of death as 2221, and Appendix B of RotK giving the date of accession as 2251. "2251 Tar-Atanamir takes the sceptre. Rebellion and division of the Númenoreans begins." In note 10 of The Line of Elros: Kings of Numenor, Christopher Tolkien indicates that the 2251 should be the correct date of death, and the Appendix entry should read: "2251 Death of Tar-Atanamir. Tar-Ancalimon takes the sceptre. Rebellion and division of the Númenoreans begins." He points out that this is supported by the Akallabêth where is said that the division began in the time of Tar-Ancalimon.
"Then Tar-Ancalimon, son of Atanamir, became King, and he was of like mind; and in his day the people of Númenor became divided."
The Silmarillion, Akallabêth
"In his time the rift became wider between the King's Men (the larger part) and those who maintained their ancient friendship with the Eldar. Many of the King's Men began to forsake the use of the Elven-tongues, and to teach them no longer to their children."
